Self priming pumps create and maintain a sufficient vacuum level to draw fluid without external assistance. They are used in a variety of industries and are available in many different sizes. Pump manufacturers and pump suppliers that offer products such as a small self priming pump or a large self priming pump are located across the United States and around the world. Pump manufacturers often indicate how different types of self priming pumps can be used in pumping applications. For example, products designated as water pumps are designed for marine or hydrology applications. By contrast, wastewater pumps are designed to move slurries or sludge. Sampling pumps are used in agricultural and horticultural applications; in breweries, distilleries, and food processing plants; and in oil and gas exploration and production. Other types of self priming pumps are also commonly available. Because of its versatility, a self priming pump can often be used in a number of different ways.
Selecting Self Priming Pumps
Selecting a self priming pump requires a basic understanding of pump technologies. Common types of self priming pumps include the self priming centrifugal pump, self priming chemical pump, and self priming water pump. Seal-less self-priming pumps are also available. A self priming centrifugal pump can pump a gas, liquid, or combination of a liquid and gas. Typically, a self priming centrifugal pump creates a vacuum that can be operated with suction if water is located in the body of the pump. The self priming water pump is used to pump clean water for both agricultural and commercial applications. Self priming water pumps are usually centrifugal pumps that can pump approximately 40 liters (l) per minute. The seal-less self-priming pump is designed for heavy-duty applications. Commonly transported media include liquids, slurries, solvents, salts, and acids. Self priming pumps that can transfer fluids or gases in the forward or backward direction may provide a mild pumping action. A seal-less self-priming pump operates by being divided into two sections: a blend-able outer wall and a rigid thermoplastic interior. The media being transported moves between these two walls. The self priming chemical pump is similar in function to the self priming centrifugal pump in that both types of self priming pumps permit the flow of water, slurry, dyes, and oil.
