Florfenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the amphenicols group. It is a bacteriostatic agent that works by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. It has strong antibacterial activity against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Hemolytic Pasteurella, multi-drug resistant Pasteurella, and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae are highly sensitive to florfenicol. In vitro, florfenicol has similar or stronger antibacterial activity than thiamphenicol against many microorganisms. Some bacteria that are resistant to amphenicols due to acetylation, such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, may still be sensitive to florfenicol.
